Mike Horn The AdventurerOne of the world’s most celebrated modern-day explorers is South African, and he is ready to undertake his greatest adventure by launching an expedition that is being hailed as one of the most significant voyages ever undertaken.

Adventurer Mike Horn announced the launch of The Pangaea Expedition, a journey that will see Horn trans-navigate the planet in a journey that will span over four years.

The expedition has been undertaken to raise environmental awareness and offer solutions to issues such as sustainability. Horn feels the best way to inspire change in the way we relate to our environment is through the younger generations.

The Pangaea Expedition will definitely not be a friendless occasion as Horn will be accompanied by 12 youths through various stages of the journey. The youths will range between the ages of 13 and 20 and will help in the development of community projects in the service of hygiene, sanitation and water-supply.

“By working together with ingenuity, drive and resourcefulness, the energies of our individual efforts can complement each other and create a collective momentum to inspire change. Together we can tap the world’s most powerful energy source - the younger generation,” Horn commented on the need to teach the youth about the environment.

As Horn teaches and learns about self-sustainability, he will clock up over 100, 000 kilometres in the trek across every continent and over every sea as he tries to reach both the North and South Pole.

“This is the most exciting venture I have undertaken. It is a treasure hunt to uncover the solutions I know are there,” says Horn

Among the many journeys Horn has taken, some of the most noteworthy include solo circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle lasting 27 months, the first ever night expedition to the North Pole and navigating the earth via the equator with no motorised transport.

In 2001 Horn was rewarded for his tireless work by receiving the Laureus Award for Alternative Sportsmen of the Year.

Transporting Horn and his crew on the epic journey is the 35-metre sailing vessel, The Pangaea, which has been equipped with the latest sustainable technologies and is constructed with easily recyclable aluminium.

Horn and marine experts spent over 22, 000 hours of design time to make sure the boat was as eco-friendly as possible while placing priority on the safety of it’s passengers and crew.

Horn and crew will embark on The Pangaea Expedition when the huge craft sets sail from Punta Arenas, Chile on October 9. Their route will see them mission through Australasia, China, Russia, on route to the North Pole, over Greenland, North and South America returning to Punta Arenas.

Horn will make his way through South Africa to Kenya in 2012 when the Pangaea is berthed in Cape Town.
